All about VPNs

Connecting one site having a private network to another site with a private network is done through VPN.

The first question that comes in mind is Does it require Encryption ??

Ans. No, it is not necessary. MPLS VPS and L2 VPNs(will cover in another article) do not require encryption. It is recommended!!

It is the L3 VPNs which require encryption and they will covered within the CCIE Course.

So what differentiates them ?

Ans. The mode connection they are providing. In layer 2 VPN, 2 sites are connectd using some type of layer 2 mechanism such as DLCI no.(frame relay) , VPI (ATM) , Vlan tag(q-n-q), Label (MPLS).

In layer 3 , it is an IP address.

You have an outer header and inner header which is encapsulation.

So just to brief below are the topics which we will cover as part of our CCIE preparation for version 5 . We will follow the same pattern as we did in our previous slides (Theory and then Lab).

Each series will hold Tag followed by the topic number.

1. IPSEC

2. GRE

3. GRE over IPSEC

4. SVTI

5. MGRE

6. DMVPN

7.

8.
